2010 GYL Boys Program
GYL offers lacrosse programs for boys in grades 1-8, who are residents of Greenwich.
Boys Program Philosophy
We strive to provide each player the appropriate age level of coaching instruction; we seek to build a player’s confidence in learning lacrosse skills; we aspire to develop a sense of teamwork and fair play; we honor the game by respecting the rules, our opponents, officials, our teammates and ourselves; and we aim to develop character values that will benefit today’s players in later years and in other endeavors. Players will learn the value of teamwork, determination, and commitment, and HAVE FUN playing lacrosse.
GYL Boys House League Program (Grades 1-6)
- House League is the core of the GYL program for boys in grades 1-6, and is a wonderful option for those who cannot make a commitment to a travel team. House League takes place on Saturday afternoons from March 20th - May 15th, 2010. Emphasis is on rules of the game and teaching the fundamentals of lacrosse including stick handling, cradling, catching and passing. The boys participate in half field drills and scrimmages. House League will meet at the following times at the Greenwich High School back turf fields:
1st grade: 1:00 – 2:00pm
2nd grade: 2:00 – 3:00pm
3rd grade: 3:00 - 4:00pm
4th grade: 4:00 – 5:00pm
5th/6th grade: 5:00 - 6:00pm
- Boys who play travel in grades 3 - 5 are required to attend house league.
GYL Boys Travel Program (Grades 3-8)
-
The GYL Boys Travel program is open to boys in grades 3-8.
-
Participation on a 5th thru 8th grade GYL travel team requires a commitment to attend practices and weekend games. Bantam Boys will practice 1x week with games on weekends.
-
Tryouts for team placement (grades 5-8) will be posted on our site. The 3rd and 4th grade teams will be evenly divided once season practices.
-
Registration in GYL travel programs is on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
Enrollment at each age group is limited to ensure that GYL maintains the high quality programs it has always provided.
-
The travel program commitment is from March 1st through June 8th, 2010.
Friday Night Skill Clinics
- Friday Night Clinics (Grades 1-6) provide excellent specific skill training as well as a fun social environment. Coaches participate in creative drills with the boys, and we very often welcome surprise guests who “wow” us with special skills and tell us about their experiences in the NCAA and world events. The Friday Night Clinics have become an important component of skill building for the boys.
- Participation from all grade levels is highly encouraged!
- Friday Night Clinics will begin on Friday April 3rd and continue through Friday May 8th (unless otherwise posted), and meet at the Greenwich High School Turf fields from 6:15-7:30pm.
GYL Statement on Player Commitment
Participation on a GYL travel team requires enthusiasm, focus and 100% effort.
Registration in GYL travel programs is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Enrollment at each age group is limited to ensure that GYL maintains the high quality programs it has always provided.
We expect that if you want to play on a travel team, you will attend all practices and games (including house league) in their entirety. In fairness to those players who do attend all practices and games, players who miss house league or travel practices or games without good reason (school, religion, family or health) may lose playing time or their position on the team.
If you want to play on a GYL travel team and you also play another spring sport, we expect that you will make lacrosse your PRIORITY sport this spring. Our expectation, on behalf of all boys and girls who want to play on travel teams, is that you will attend all lacrosse events if you are chosen for a travel team, even if there is a scheduling conflict with your other sport.
Travel team players who need to miss a practice or game for good reason must email or call their coach prior to the practice or game they will miss.
